In November 2004, Richard completed the New York Marathon in just over 5 hours. Whats so good about that? you ask.

Well, Richard, a 28-year-old swimming teacher, was born with no legs below the knees. When he tackled the 26 plus miles he did so without the aid of his prosthetic legs. Instead he wore specially-cushioned shoes fitted where his prosthetic limbs are normally attached. He raised £5,000 for the Macmillan Cancer fund. A keen cricketer, he is captain of Nottinghamshire's disabled cricket team and, along with two team-mates was chosen to represent England. He's also played for Great Britain at sledge hockey - a version of ice hockey. He has even appeared in blockbuster films, including Ridley Scott's Gladiator as a battle victim.

In 2001 Mike Thornewill and his wife Fiona, both of Nottinghamshire, became the first couple ever to reach both the South and North Poles on foot.

Christopher Dean is easily the most widely recognised of all the ex-pupils of our school. His achievements in the world of Ice Dancing are second-to-none. After teaming up with Jayne Torvill, in 1980, they were world ice dance champions (1981-4) and Olympic champions (1984). Their highly acclaimed performances included an interpretation of music from Ravel's Bolero, and the musical, Barnum. At the height of their success, they received a record total of 136 perfect ‘sixes’ (the highest award a judge can give in ice-skating). They retired from competitive skating in 1984, and became professional, producing their own ice show. They returned to national and international competition when the competitions were declared open to professionals in 1993 and competed in the 1994 European Championships, where they won the gold medal, and the 1994 Winter Olympics, when they won the bronze medal.

Still holds the record at Notts for the highest 9th wicket partnership. This was achieved in 1994 when Kevin and Jimmy Adams put on 170 versus Somerset at Taunton.

He played 161 matches for Notts. Appearing alongside such

all-time greats as Sir Richard Hadlee and Clive Rice.

Made his debut in goal for Derby County in 1978. He went on to make 90 appearances for the club. He left in 1984, to have spells with Walsall and Plymouth Argyle. In 1989 he was transfered to his home town club of Notts County. For the magpies, between 89 and 1995, he had 297 outings as their number one shot-stopper. After leaving Notts Steve played for Watford, Plymouth Argyle, Rotherham, Rushden & Diamonds, Mansfield Town, Oldham Athletic. Even in the year 2004 Steve still turns out for Belper Town.

Marcus has been a BBC man for a few years now but that is not the only reason why he has been included here. This is the man who, through his website www.brianclough.com has been petitioning for a Knighthood for the great former Nottingham Forest manager. Even after Mr Clough's 2004 death Marcus didn't give up. He took his petition to 10 Downing Street for a posthumous honour. Signed by over 7500 people, including Gary Lineker, John Motson, Jimmy Greaves, Trevor Francis and Peter Shilton.
